Summary Vita

Douglas K. Hartman is Professor of Literacy & Technology in the College of Education at the Michigan State University. He also holds appointments as Senior Editor of the Journal of Literacy Research, Co-Director & Principal Investigator in the Literacy Achievement Research Center, and Research Fellow with the Center for Health Intervention & Prevention.

Dr. Hartman has authored nearly 50 journal articles, book chapters, technical reports, and book reviews. Among his publications are: a chapter in the Handbook of Reading Research (Volume III); a research report on Evaluating the Development of Scientific Knowledge and New Forms of Reading Comprehension During Online Reading; and an essay on “The Influence of Media on Literacy in the Next Millennium” in Reading Research Quarterly. Dr. Hartman's research interests focus on new literacies, adolescent literacy, health literacy and the history of literacy. His work has been funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York’s Adolescent Literacy Initiative, the Spencer Foundation’s Research Grant Program, the National Academy of Education’s Spencer Post-doctoral Fellowship program, NCTE’s Research Foundation, and IRA’s Elva Knight Research Fund.

Dr. Hartman recently received the prestigious Albert J. Kingston Award for distinguished service to the field of reading and literacy, as well as gave the Annual Research Review Address at the National Reading Conference on “One Hundred Years of Reading Research—1908-2008.” Early in his career, his dissertation was awarded the International Reading Association's Outstanding Dissertation Award, the National Reading Conference's Student Research Award, and Finalist recognition for the National Council of Teachers of English's Promising Researcher Award. He was also profiled as a promising young literacy researcher in the journal Reading Psychology. He has served on the review boards of Reading Research Quarterly, Journal of Literacy Research, and The Reading Teacher, as well as state assessment advisory committees, conference proposal review boards, and research award committees.

At Michigan State University, Dr. Hartman teaches seminars on technology & literacy, adolescent literacy, and the history of literacy. In addition, he has been a visiting professor at UC Berkeley and Teachers College, Columbia University. He received his B.S. in Social Science from Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon, taught middle school literature and reading in Oregon, finished his M.A. in Reading at California State University, Fresno, and completed his Ph.D. in Literacy and Language at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he worked as a research assistant at the Center for the Study of Reading.
